Rodin: Burghers of Calais

6/28/1979 To 8/26/1979

The seventeen pieces of sculpture in this exhibition by Auguste Rodin were sculptural studies for one of the artist’s masterpieces, Burghers of Calais. The piece was commissioned in 1884 by the citizens of Calais to honor the six wealthy men who agreed to be condemned to death by the English in 1344, during the 100 Years War, in order to spare the rest of the population. The pieces in the exhibition were cast bronzes from the studies and plaster sketches originally made by Rodin. All seventeen pieces were from the collection of the Cantor Fitzgerald Group.
