Museum Tours

Tours at the Art Museum of South Texas promote critical thinking and interdisciplinary curriculum applications. On their visits to the Museum, students strengthen visual literacy skills, develop vocabulary and foster observational and evidence-based thinking.

Tour Options
Both guided and self-led tours are available. Please note that self-led tours MUST be scheduled so as not to overwhelm the Museum galleries. The Museum’s Education Department can provide a general tour of its galleries or customize a program around various disciplines, themes or ideas expressed in a class curriculum. Students can participate in a related hands-on activity for an additional charge. Rural school districts may be eligible to receive free outreach programming and guided tours. Please contact the Education Department at 361.825.3504 for more information.

Fees and Chaperones
The Museum can accommodate approximately 40 students during each hour-long tour. Guided tours for groups of 10 or more are currently $5.00 per person; chaperones are free of charge. One adult chaperone is required for every 7-10 students, depending on age. Self-guided tours are free with Museum admission. 

Public Tours
The Museum offers a free (with Museum admission) docent-led public tour every second Saturday of the month from 1 – 4 p.m. with tours starting every hour on the hour.

Tour Times
School tours are offered Tuesday through Friday, excluding holidays or special events and begin promptly on the hour starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tours should be scheduled AT LEAST 2 weeks in advance.

Once you have a tour time in mind, please use our tour request form below to send us your information. Please note that even self-guided tours must be scheduled with the Education Department. No tour is regarded as confirmed without a written letter of confirmation from the Education Department. Please bring this letter with you to the Museum when you tour.

If you are unable to use the form, please call the Education Department at 361.825.3504. Be prepared to provide the name of your school, the grade level, number of students and a contact name and number as well as any tour or activity preferences and tour time. 

Before Your Tour
Prepare students and chaperones for your trip to the Museum by downloading and reviewing our Museum Etiquette guidelines. Assign chaperones to his/her group of students before entering the Museum. 

What to Bring

  • Name tags: Please provide a name tag for each student and adult on your tour. These act as your admission into the Museum. 
  • Clipboards/pencils (optional): If you would like to have your class write or draw, please bring your own clipboards, pencils, paper or other drawing materials. Remember, only pencils are allowed in the galleries to protect the artwork.

Do NOT Bring

  • Backpacks, large bags or lunches: There is no storage for large bags, backpacks, lunchboxes or bags. 
  • Cameras: As a general rule, photography and/or video is not allowed in the Museum. This includes the use of cell phone cameras.   

When You Arrive
Buses should drop students off at the Shoreline turnaround and park in the Barge Dock. Buses may not park in the main Museum parking lot by the Water Garden.

Please plan transportation so that you may arrive no more than 15 minutes early. Please note that if you are late, your tour will be shortened.  If you are more than 20 minutes late, your tour will become a self-guided tour. If you are delayed, please call the main Museum line at 361.825.3500 at soon as possible.

Once at the Museum, classes will be divided into groups of approximately 10 to 12 students to provide a better learning experience.  

If you need to cancel your tour, please call the Museum’s Education Department at 361.825.3504 as soon as possible. We appreciate cancellations at least 72 hours in advance.
